WESTLAND PETREL Procellaria westlandica

Breeding in up to 29 colonies in the west of South Island, because of this it is listed as endangered although about twice as numerous as the previous species. Most birds show a definite black tip to the bill, breeding in winter they are less likely to be seen as most birders visit in summer, although some birds remain in NZ waters year round. Dispersal is directly east to the Humboldt Current off Chile, indeed I saw my first there although these were taken in NZ waters.
