Breeding in the subtropical northwest Pacific as far east as the Hawaiian
Islands, it can usually be separated from similar species by the paler rump as compared with the tail. A fairly local species,
thought to number less than 10,000 pairs, it has been recorded as a vagrant to the Farallon Islands and Australia, but generally
does not disperse too far from its breeding islands. The photos here were taken off the Bonin Islands, the first two in torrential rain.
