MARKHAM'S STORM-PETREL Hydrobates markhami

A Near-threatened species breeding in the same region as the previous species, on the Paracas Peninsular and the Atacama desert, just into Chile. Locally common, it disperses north where it can be difficult to distinguish from Black Storm-petrel breeding around Baja and dispersing south. It is also similar to the next species, Tristram's, that breeds in the eastern Pacific, but could be found as a vagrant in the west. All three are characterised by being large and having dark rumps and a deeply forked tail. Another species very difficult to observe, as there are few reliable pelagics off Peru, these photos were taken from our cruise ship sailing up the Humboldt Current.
