PYCROFT'S PETREL Pterodroma pycrofti

A Vulnerable endemic breeding off the north-east of New Zealand, on islands in the Hauraki Gulf among others. Rarely identified at sea due to its similarity to Cook's, and also its dispersal, which takes it to the North Pacific as far as Hawaii, but rarely near the US coast, unlike Cook's and some other species. Photographs have proved equally difficult, although the right-hand bird at least was positively identified by an expert on a South-west Pacific Odyssey cruise. Formerly lumped with Stejnegers.
