A much smaller population of this species breeds on a few islands off Chile, 85% on Isla Mocha
and the rest in the Juan Fernandez group. As such they are listed as Vulnerable. Quite common on the eastern seaboard of the Americas, as far north as
Canada. Birds often remain off Peru and Baja California. There are dark and intermediate morphs but they account for only 0.1% of the population.
