A large shearwater bearing some resemblance to Cory's, but breeding only in the Juan Fernandez group and an island off Chile, it is listed as vulnerable. A stong transequatorial migrant, it is frequently seen off the western seaboard of North America, although there have recently been records off New Zealand on a regular basis. The plumage, especially underparts, is quite variable.
