NEW ZEALAND STORM-PETREL Fregetta maoriana

In the same genus as the previous two species, this was famously re-discovered in 2003 after being previously known only from three specimens, the last in 1868 (Flood et al 2003). It has been found to breed on Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf and recorded at sea as far away as Gau, Fiji. Quite a distinctive species, although the amount of streaking does vary. We were actually in New Zealand when the bird was re-discovered, but it was 2007, on a pelagic before the Western Pacific Odyssey, before I saw one. We saw at least two that day, and a different bird at the northern edge of the Hauraki Gulf the following day.
