MOTTLED PETREL Pterodroma inexpectata

Another ship-hating species, whose wild and impetuous flight makes it even harder to photograph. Neither does its range, since it breeds only on Chatham Island and islands in the Foveaux Strait (between Stewart Island and South Island, NZ), where the seas are often among the roughest in the world. In this case the diagnostic feature is the dark grey belly and white underwings.
