MACGILLIVRAY'S PRION Pachyptila macgillivrayi

Not universally accepted as a species, but described originally from islands in the Indian subantarctic, notably St. Paul. However, until recently that population was in decline due to rats, but two breeding populations of Prions are found on Gough which breed 2-3 months apart. The later breeders are thought to be MacGillivrays, and the original St. Paul population is in recovery following rat eradication measures. Plumage differences between these birds and Broad-billed Prion are slight but usually consistent.
