ANTARCTIC PRION Pachyptila desolata

An abundant prion, maybe 20 million pairs, breeding on subantarctic islands from South Georgia to New Zealand, with probably many undiscovered colonies. Although no subspecies are currently described, there is some difference between Indian and Atlantic Ocean birds, however it is probably clinal, and minor features make separation from other taxa difficult. Dense flocks are the norm, often in hundreds. Not known to breed on Antarctica, but disperses both north and south over quite an extensive area, often seen in the Humboldt Current, and off Australia and New Zealand.
