JOUANIN'S PETREL Bulweria fallax

A genus of two Bulweria petrels completes the tubenoses, one is restricted in range, the other widespread. This is the Indian Ocean representative, which breeds on Socotra Island and possibly Oman, whilst many are sedentary, others, possibly immatures, disperse as far as the Seychelles and even Northern Australian waters. Vagrants are not unknown, there are records from Hawaii and California. The large bulbous bill is an easy distinguishing feature from other all-dark petrels and shearwaters which could occur in the same area.
