Sometimes thought to form a superspecies with Wedge-tailed, the "M"-mark on the back is diagnostic. Breeding regularly only on Poor Knights Island, off North Island, NZ, it is a fairly common species, but listed as vulnerable due to its breeding range. Usually solitary and seen inshore, non-breeding birds range widely across most of the Pacific, and are often seen off Chile; they are happy to approach vessels, especially smaller ones.
