BLACK-CAPPED PETREL "WHITE-FACED" Pterodroma hasitata

There are two "forms" of this petrel, Black and White-faced. They are genetically distinct, and this taxa may be a somewhat earlier breeder, few breeding stations having been found. They also tend to disperse to different regions, although both are found in the Gulf Stream. Readily told apart by the amount of white on the face and particularly the nape, there is unfortunately a number of intermediates. Whilst these when examined have proved to be genetically attributable to White-faced, the exact situation is unclear, although it seem two species are involved, at least historically.
