Despite the scientific name this species breeds on a less extensive area of Antarctica than Adelie, and also slightly further north, colonies being commoner from the Peninsular to South Georgia. Very slightly smaller but quite distinctive, it also tends to nest at higher elevations. A more aggressive species, colonies are often the scene of fights between neighbouring birds. |
