Found on most tropical and subtropical islands throughout the world, this species is unique among Sulidae in that it
occurs in several phases, from fully white to fully brown, with intermediates such as brown with white head and tail etc. Three subspecies have been described, the Atlantic
and Eastern Pacific populations seem to be on the verge of speciation. The most populated area is Galapagos, white birds there have black tails, and strangely, brown morphs
are absent from the Carribean.
