The genus leucocarbo, or "blue-eyed" shags consists of a further fourteen taxa which are closely related island forms in the main.
Found in the subantarctic, particularly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, most are sedentary and obviously, difficult to see and photograph. Bounty Shag has never been recorded away from
Bounty Island, apart from one record at the Antipodes in 1950. Many of these shags look very similar, but identification can usually be relied upon by range alone.
