By far the rarest of the Phoebastria albatrosses, at one time confined to Torishima Island (Izu group) and down to about fifty pairs, this species seems to be slowly increasing its numbers and, more importantly, its range, having bred (or attempted to) on a number of Japanese islands and Midway in the Hawaiian chain. Unlike others of its genus it doesn't seem to be attracted to ships, hence the somewhat poor photos.
