MOTH LINKS

We have never been terribly serious about moths, just enjoying what we manage to trap at our home near The Wash and occasional nights when away in our campervan. The links here are just those that we use, but there are many more if you want to become more involved.

ATROPOS.    A wealth of information from this site which is primarily concerned with migrant moths. Publishes a quarterly magazine (subscription) and has itself a number of useful links, as well as selling books about insects, often at discounted prices

TC DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY.    The website of an old friend from twitching days, Tony Collinson. Here because it has plans for home-made Robinson and Skinner traps, which are just as effective as commercial ones but far cheaper for the sake of a little DIY. The results may not be elegant, depending on your skills, but the moths don't mind!

NORFOLK MOTHS.    A number of counties have moth groups, membership of which is inexpensive, and several have websites, of which this is the best we've come across. With such features as "flying tonight" which gives an illustrated list of records for any given month, it is a great help with identification. Lincolnshire has no formal group, but we are only three miles from the border so a lot of info' is relevant.

SUFFOLK MOTHS.     Although it began in a different format, this site is now modelled exactly on Norfolk's site, indeed the two appear on each others dropdown menu on the home tab. It is interesting to compare the different records from each county.

BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION.    Over the years my main supplier of Canon equipment, and a really good mail order service. Prices are competitive, and delivery rapid. A really good website, not always the cheapest but pretty close usually, plus they offer interest free instalments.

NATIONAL MOTH RECORDING SCHEME.    A direct link to the national scheme for records. Although every county has a moth recorder, ease of reporting varies, and as we trap in many counties from time to time we find it more convenient to us this site. Unfortunately it has to be one species at a time, so we only tend to report unusual or rare species.

UK MOTHS.    A very useful identification guide for both Macro and Micro moths, with brief descriptions and photos of most species, certainly macros. The only slight criticism is the small number of shots of each species, because many are very variable, but it is a useful additional source.

ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES FOR MOTH-ING.    Actually a link from a website involved in insect breeding (presumably for butterfly houses etc.) this is a useful source of supply for bulbs, chokes, portable batteries etc. Also supply complete sets of electrical equipment for standard traps. I have to say the site doesn't look too professional, but the service is excellent, and I've not found cheaper prices.

GUIDE TO MOTH TRAPPING     An excellent guide to starting out and beyond, originally published by Birdguides, and written by Steve Whitehouse, a name which will be familiar to many. Originally released in 2011 it's in two parts, this is part 2, but has a link to part 1.

ALS.    Anglian Lepidopterist Supplies. All things moth and butterfly, premium prices but nowhere else is particularly cheaper (if you find someone please let us know). Electricals etc. can be obtained elsewhere, but things such as pheremones are otherwise hard to source. Large range including books, run by Jon Clifton who is also East Norfolk recorder.
