ALEUTIAN TERN Onychoprion aleuticus

Until relatively recently this species, which breeds in the North Pacific including Alaska, wintered in undiscovered areas. A number of records came from Hong Kong on the back of typhoons, but in 2017 a bird was recorded north of Newcastle, Australia. It has become a regular wintering area and up to ten birds have been seen there this year. It seems birds winter along coastal regions of South-east Asia, the birds from Oz being the most southerly records. The main page photo is a distant record shot of a breeding bird.
