GREAT-BILLED HERON Ardeola sumatrana

A secretive bird of mangrove and riverside forest, found in Northern Australia and southern South-east Asia. The easiest place is probably the Daintree River cruise at the bottom of the Cape York Peninsular. Even so it took us several attempts to get a half decent photo, from a site near Darwin, to Kakadu, and the aforementioned cruise twice. Even then the boat had passed the bird, hidden in riverside vegetation, before we spotted it.
