TAHITI PETREL Pseudobulweria rostrata

Formerly classified as a pterodroma, this near-threatened species breeds on Tahiti and Moorea, Marquesas, American Samoa and the Gambiers, with a second race trouessarti on New Caledonia and possibly Fiji (probably these illustrated). Similar to Phoenix Petrel in appearence but the jizz is different and not pterodroma-like. However the smaller Beck's Petrel, which is almost identical but smaller, does overlap in range. We did see one Beck's on our 2007 SW Pacific trip, it's rediscovery wasn't actually published until 2008. We did try to follow it but to no avail!
