The earlier epithet "Northern" isn't really accurate, since whilst it doesn't breed as far south, it breeds on New Zealand Subantarctic and Indian Ocean Islands, some of which are also breeding stations for Southern Giant petrel, and occasional hybrids occur. Unlike its congener it doesn't have a white phase, but both have a distinctive humpbacked appearance in flight.
