GOULD'S PETREL Pterodroma leucoptera

This bird may or may not be a subspecies of the next, Collared, but is now generally accepted as a good species. Long thought to breed only on Cabbage Tree Island, off NSW Australia, it has more recently been found on New Caledonia, although some authorities suggest that population is another species! Quite widespread in its pelagic range, dispersing East and North, it seems to have declined in recent years, judging by numbers seen on Australian pelagic trips.
