One of several similar species showing a distinct "M"-mark on the upperwing, sometimes called "Cookillaria". Larger than some, the underwing pattern with large black patches is diagnostic. Breeding on the Leeward Hawaiian chain as well as the Bonins, we found them to be very common in a narrow band encompassing two to three days sailing, and not seen south or north of this area.
