REED or LONG-TAILED CORMORANT Microcarbo africanus

Two Microcarbo occur in Africa, one is range restricted, this is locally common over most of sub-Saharan Africa, with a second subspecies on Madagascar. Birds are fledged with white underparts which rapidly darken (left-hand bird). The intermediate plumage gives an attractive pattern on the back, but full breeding birds are all black, with sometimes a purple or greenish gloss. The long tail together with its size make it unmistakeable.
