GREAT GREBE Podiceps major

A widespread species, from coastal Peru, through Paraguay and SE Brazil to the tip of Chile and Argentina. Nowhere abundant, its population size is unknown but thought to be stable. It is the world's largest grebe, and often found on the sea, especially non-breeding birds which may form fairly large flocks. Breeding is on inland lakes and sometimes slow-moving rivers.
