The situation with Royal Albatrosses is far less complex, studies suggest a split into Northern and Southern, which as well as genetic differences show consistently different plumage characteristics. Northern breeds on islands in the Chatham group, and Taiaroa Head, the world's only mainland Albatross colony in New Zealand.
