A distinctive wader, previously placed in its own genus,
it breeds in tundra areas of Canada and Alaska. A long-distance migrant wintering in
central South America, it is a scarce vagrant to Europe, less than annual in Britain,
where the pattern suggests some birds to be returning annually. The right hand shot is an old
record taken in 2002 at Pennington Marsh, Hampshire.
