LESSER YELLOWLEGS Tringa flavipes

PREVIOUS

A slighter version of the previous species, which could explain why it crosses the Atlantic so readily, overall numbers are also possibly higher than Greater. Occurs in Britain in all months, although some birds have probably lived here for some time and are likely to have originated in Autumn. Lesser is a more elegant bird, the best distinguishing feature of a lone bird is the finer, shorter bill, but juvenile Redshanks can also cause confusion as they may have yellow or orangey legs.
