KELP GULL Larus

PREVIOUS

The only gull which has become really established in the Southern Hemisphere, breeding in the Australias, Africa, South America and on the Antarctic Peninsular. The second bird shown is in non-breeding plumage, rarely seen by European birders, and shows quite heavy streaking as compared with its Northern Black-backed counterparts. There is quite a lot of variation between populations, particularly in bare-parts colours, and it is possible there may be more than one species.
