BONAPARTE'S GULL Larus philadelphia

A North American inland breeder, fairly regular in Britain, and one of the world's smallest gulls. The photo on the right shows well the grey "shawl" one of the main diagnostic features of a 1st winter bird, the most common plumage seen in Europe. It is actually named after Napoleon's cousin, not the famous emperor.
