The South American avocet, mainly restricted to the puna of the Andean chain, in
Peru, Bolivia, N.Chile and NW. Argentina. Whereas other avocets are lowland species it is found almost
always at altitude. It has the
most recurved bill of all four species, and relatively short legs, which with its somewhat
bulky body, make it less elegant than the others.
