Taken in Ethiopia and Namibia, this species and the similar Madagascar and Lesser Jacanas
constitue the African representatives of the family. Also known as lily-trotters because their
large toes enable them to do just that, jacanas are common in most tropical wetlands throughout the
world, and reach more temperate areas in South and Central America, Northern Jacana occasionally
breeding as far north as Texas.
