Both races of Upland Goose occur as a white phase, which is
unbarred on the belly and lower flanks, in the case of leucoptera it is the sole phase. The female is
identical in both phases, but barred birds seem to be the predominant phase on Tierra del Fuego and the southern
mainland. This has led to a suggestion that barred birds may be a seperate species, but intermediates do occur,
if only on a small scale, and genetic studies would be required, hardly a priority given the species' abundance.
