SMEW Mergellus albellus

Many people's favourite duck. Although breeding across most of Eurasia from northern Scandinavia eastwards, its overall population is quite low, although it is stable. South-east England is on the edge of its winter range, and there are always a few around, numbers depend on the weather conditions on the European continent, if freezing occurs wildfowl are pushed west and UK numbers increase. Climate change may see us lose this beautiful visitor. Monotypic, male and female (redhead) are very different, but many redheads are in fact immature males.
