RINGED TEAL Callonetta leucophrys

Another aberrant dabbling duck, little studied and with a distribution restricted to a belt east of the Andes. Found on streams, marshes and pools in open forest areas, usually in pairs or small groups, it is a hole nester but has also been found nesting among huge stick nests of Monk Parakeets. Some birds move north in winter, but since breeding areas are little known, it is unclear how far, certainly to southern Brazil. The left-hand birds are captive, others were taken at Costanera del Sur in Buenos Aires, which at the time was an unusual record.
