REDHEAD Aythya americana

The other common Aythya in North America, easily distinguished from the previous species. Ranges are similar except Redhead breeds further south with less in western Canada and Alaska, most birds winter around the Gulf of Mexico. Again a species that has eluded my camera in the US, there are only two UK records, one in Ireland and the bird shown to the left, the only accepted record, in Nottingham, which returned to a nearby location the following year. There are several "not proven" records, including the right hand bird in Wales, which was initially accepted and then rejected, possibly because of the too prominent white area on the bill indicating hybridisation. Other photos were taken in captivity.
