And now for something completely different! Recently placed
in its own genus, this beautiful shelduck is sadly rather uncommon, especially in the Moluccas and New Guinea,
which is the nominate race. Rather larger is the race found mainly in Australia, rufitergum, although it
is still small compared to other shelducks. Found in pairs on lakes, mangrove swamps and sheltered bays near
the coast, birds are quite tame, and obviously photogenic.
