Breeding in three populations, Greenland, Iceland and
Svalbard. Svalbard birds winter in northwest Europe, but Greenland birds migrate to Iceland, thence
almost all the population migrates to the UK, and large flocks are found in Scotland, Lancashire and Norfolk.
Numbers vary, and there is interchange between populations (usually weather dependent). Interestingly, as
farming practices have changed, Norfolk birds are beginning to winter further south, and flocks frequently
occur near my house in South Lincolnshire.
