The familiar swan in the UK and Europe, truly wild birds breed
in the steppe lakes of Central Asia, but introductions began as early as the 1100's, and numbers are on the
increase throughout temperate Europe. Some of these populations are migratory. Introductions have also been made
to Australia and New Zealand, eastern USA and South Africa, but numbers have remained small and the birds
are sedentary. However in England at least they are a common species, and relatively tame as they are no
longer hunted.
