Related to the next species, White-winged Duck of Asia, this bird
has given rise to many domesticated forms, but wild birds are found over large parts of Central America south to
Argentina and Brazil. Everywhere local, on forest lakes and rivers, they keep away from human settlement because
they are hunted, and are found in small flocks usually. Resident but do disperse somewhat when not breeding, records
from Texas are increasing and birds from Mexican nest-box schemes are now found on the Rio Grande. Elsewhere escapes
and feral populations are found in many countries, usually with more white in the plumage to a greater or lesser extent,
indicating domesticated genes.
