A local resident of eastern Madagascar, thought to number less than 1600 pairs,
this (almost critically) endangered duck didn't attract much attention for many years as it was thought to be a female-type
mallard. There are now a few breeding programmes, notably WWF in the UK, but it is still declining in the wild, and although
it does indeed look somewhat like a female mallard, we count ourselves fortunate to have photographed these in the wild.
