Seemingly larger and darker than nominate birds, most winter
in western Scotland and Ireland. Vagrants occur in England fairly frequently, these birds were taken at Welney, in Norfolk, when
I was allowed access during a foot and mouth epidemic in order to illustrate an article by the warden. A split
is unlikely, but they are quite distinctive.
