A common species, found from the UK to Japan, but it is the only
truly migratory duck in the northern hemisphere, wintering to the south in Africa, India and South-east Asia. Birds
have a preference for well-vegetated wetlands, and can be very secretive during the breeding season. An abundant
species but heavily hunted, especially in France and Eastern Europe, numbers may be declining.
