The smallest of all widfowl, widespread throughout tropical
Asia, and also found locally in northeast Australia, described as a separate race. Found on more open water
than the previous species, it otherwise shares similar habits, although it is not so dependent on the prescence
of water lilies. Largely resident, some populations are dispersive in the wet season, resulting in regular records
from as far west as Oman, and vagrants in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Australian race, which are the birds shown
here, is declining and may number less than 1500 birds.
