An Australian endemic, its breeding range is still quite
restricted, mainly swamps in the Murray-Darling basin. There are isolated populations in Tasmania, southeast
Queensland and Western Australia, but it is affected by habitat loss. Large flocks gather outside the breeding
season, when it is far easier to see and photograph, apart from these small movements it is sedentary.
These photos were taken in Western Australia.
