Almost circumpolar, with the next taxa, breeding on Arctic
tundra, this is currently a subspecies of Tundra Swan C. columbianus. Breeding across Russian Europe
and Asia, there is an area of sympatry in E. Asia where hybridisation occurs, this has led largely to the
retention of the two as subspecies. Bewick's Swan seems to be in decline, formerly the commoner of the two
species wintering in the UK, it is now found in small numbers whereas Whooper Swan predominates.
