A Madagascan endemic, related to the Grey Teal complex, most
closely to Andaman Teal. Its range encompasses a narrow coastal strip wherever there are mangroves, along the
whole of the west coast and the extreme north-east, it is rarely seen elsewhere. It is listed as endangered,
and probably numbers less than 2000 birds. Habitat loss is ongoing but it readily breeds in captivity. The
photos were taken on the Bembetoka River Estuary, except the obviously captive bird.
