Formerly a subspecies of Ruddy Duck, a high-altitude breeder on
Andean lakes, from Colombia to Tierra del Fuego. In itself consists of two subspecies, the nominate and
andina, which is confined to northern and western Colombia. Some authorities treat these as two full
species, as andina is an "intermediate" taxon which often shows some white on the head, recalling
Ruddy Duck. There is some dispersal to lowland areas of Argentina and Chile after breeding.
