Familiar to most Northern Hemisphere birders as it is circumpolar in its breeding areas. Recent colonisation of Southern Britain is one of the more southerly outposts, most birds being of the superficially gull-like pale phase. Dark, or "blue-phase" birds predominate in some areas, although there is much variation and many intermediates occur.
