Fairly common from Central Chile to Tierra del Fuego, including the Chilean fjords, it usually
keeps inshore but has reached the Falklands on occasion. Very little is known about this species so it could well breed in undiscovered areas.
One that is identifiable given a half-decent view, the bold white half collar behind the ear coverts stands out, as my only photograph shows. It
was taken from the ferry to Tierra del Fuego from the Chilean mainland, although they are commonly seen around Tierra.
